Season of Creation 2021 - Telling the Story at St. Joseph's - Week by Week
Week 1 - A dead tree and forest floor, burnt by the bushfires of 2019; discarded rubbish carelessly thrown away - plastic bottles, cans. Perhaps there is some hope in the bird nest containing an egg and in Pope Francis writing of Laudato Si'?
RU OK? Are you okay and is Creation okay?
Week 2 - The birds of the air; His heart binding heaven and earth. "In the heart of Jesus, which was pierced, The kingdom of heaven and the land of earth are bound together. Here is for us the source of life." [St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross]
Week 3 - The creatures of the rivers and seas, and what does and does not sustain them, trapped in nets, pollution; the Archdiocese of Brisbane Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP); the RAP group in our parish.; Laudato Si' 146 says "...land is not a commodity but rather a gift from God and from their ancestors who rest there, a sacred space..."
Week 4 - Abraham's tent - the logo for the Season of Creation 2021 symbolises "A Home for All"; the Lost Sheep; the oceans are rising threatening homes.
Week 5 - Our tree with the heart. Everything else has been removed.
We conclude with two quotes:
1. In returning to St.Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, “In the heart of Jesus, which was pierced, the kingdom of heaven and the land of earth are bound together. Here is for us the source of life."
2. Pope Francis from Laudato Si’ - On Care for Our Common Home “God, who calls us to generous commitment and to give him our all, offers us the light and the strength needed to continue on our way. In the heart of this world, the Lord of life, who loves us so much, is always present. He does not abandon us, he does not leave us alone, for he has united himself definitively to our earth, and his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward. Praise be to him!

This is a seven-year journey towards implementing the seven Laudato Si' goals promoted by the Pope in his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si' The seven Laudato Si' Goals are:
While it is as yet unclear about what this will mean in practical terms, we decided to do what we could, in partnership with the Care for Creation Group to work towards the goals of the platform. Parish Pastoral Council. |

Laudato Si' Week 2020 at the Parish of St. Joseph & St. Anthony - 16 to 24 May 2020
|
Laudato Si’ Week 16-24 May 2020 honoured the fifth anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical 'Laudato Si' - On Care for Our Common Home', with the theme of the week - “everything is connected.” Our Sunday Masses, during Laudato Si' Week, included a Laudato Si' theme. YouTube videos of the Masses are included below.
Three short Laudato Si' videos were created and inserted within each of the Masses. It is envisaged that the future use of the videos may be as a parish and school resource.
LS Video 1 is spoken by Fr Gerry Hefferan (5m 30s). LS Video 2 is spoken by nine students from St. John Fisher College (3m 57s) LS Video 3 is spoken by Phil Halpin We acknowledge CAFOD for the use of video 3 - with their permission. The forum was initiated and hosted by Our Lady Queen of Apostles Parish, Stafford. Guest speakers included Bishop Kenneth Howell, Fr Joe McKay OFM, Bernard Holland (Catholic Earthcare) and representatives from Engineers Without Borders.
Season of Creation Masses - 21 & 22 September 2019
Guided by the Global Catholic Climate Movement, our theme was taken from the international ecumenical Season of Creation website. The 2019 Season of Creation theme was "the web of life: biodiversity as God’s blessing.” They suggested this theme to help meditate on two essential facts about creation: it comes from God, and we play a part in it. And in Genesis 9:12-13 “God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of a covenant between Me and the Earth.”

We celebrated the Season of Creation at our three weekend Masses on the weekend 21 - 22 September 2019. We live in the migratory area of the ‘critically endangered’ Eastern Curlew - geographically part of the International Ramsar Wetlands Agreement.
We chose the Eastern Curlew as a symbol of the fragility and vulnerability of biodiversity. Then followed the watercolour painting of the Eastern Curlew and A Prayer for Biodiversity. The prayer was, in part, inspired through a parish retreat led by Sr. Maeve Heaney. |

Parish Family Dinner & Fr. Gerry's 40 Years of Ordination Celebration - 30 June 2019
[A Zero Waste - 100% Diverted for Landfill Event]
[A Zero Waste - 100% Diverted for Landfill Event]
Although this was not a specific Care for Creation event, we thought it important to report on how we, as a parish, went in terms of Caring for God's Creation with a two course sit-down dinner for 360 people.
Our parish Youth and Young Adults gave us great encouragement and hope when they held a 'Zero Plastic' - Parish Dinner in October 2018. We were so encouraged by them that we thought we would try for 'Zero Waste'.
Zero-Waste & 100% Diverted from Landfill was achieved by:
The introduction of the commercial compositing bin is somewhat confusing, after Sunday morning Mass morning tea, as people decide what bin to put waste in, rather that the hospitality folks managing it as they did for the Parish Dinner.

Zero-Waste & 100% Diverted from Landfill was achieved by:
- Our 'Care for Creation'-thinking parish secretary, who initiated a 'BioPak commercial composting service' for the parish. All BioPak cups, plates, cutlery, bowls etc. together with food waste went into the BioPak 'commercial composting' bins.
- The Parish Dinner planning team, who considered Care for Creation in the planning and implementation phases
- Our Master of Ceremonies, Damien, who clearly communicated the process in a positive and upbeat manner.
- Waste collection was carefully management by the Parish Hospitality Team
